The Stokes Valley community House began in November 1978 in a house in Delaney Drive until 1989 when operations moved to 212 Stokes Valley Road. The House was gifted by Poppy Watts and family to the Lower Hutt Borough Council- now known as Hutt City Council (HCC). HCC leases the house to a community focused governing body made up of local residents and supported by Northern Ward Councillors and HCC Community Development.
The governing body/management committee of the Stokes Valley Community House (Committee) is a registered Incorporated Society and is registered as a charitable entity with the charities commission.
The Community House is funded jointly by the Hutt City Council and local Wellington based non-profit community funding organizations to provide social services to the local community.
Our Vision” Knowing and Building the heart of Stokes Valley’ reflects our desire to be more than just a facility that rents rooms and accommodates the local residents. We want the organization that seeks to improve the welfare of Stokes valley and its residents and reflects the issues Stokes Valley residents face back to the wider community in Lower Hutt city. This will require a long tern approach that demands participation with the council, retailers, other community groups and residents. Meaningful and lasting community change always originates from within, and local residents in our community are the best experts on how to motivate change. Through the use of proactive volunteers and support networks within Stokes Valley the Community House has sought top develop a successful bridge of communication between residents and the wider community to better inform and improve the quality of life within our community. We endeaver to support the smooth transition of the community houses programmes to the new hub development as we go forward into the future.
