Humble beginnings

The Stokes Valley Community House began in November 1978 in a house in Delaney Drive until 1989 when the operations moved to 212 Stokes Valley Road.  The House at 212 Stokes Valley Road was gifted by Poppy Watts & family to the Lower Hutt Borough Council – now known as Hutt City Council (HCC).   HCC leases the House to a community focussed governing body made up of local Stokes Valley residents and supported by Northern Ward Councillors and HCC Community Development.

The governing body/management committee of the Stokes Valley Community House  (Committee) is a registered Incorporated Society and is registered as a charitable entity with the Charities Commission.

In March 2008, the Committee indicated that it wanted to be more responsive to the community and sought to engage in a consultation process to identify the needs of Stokes Valley and  how the Stokes Valley Community House could work with others in the community to meet those needs. Information on this consultation can be obtained from the Community House.

On Friday 14th November 2008, the Stokes Valley Hui was held at the Christian Life Centre, Evans Street, over 44 people from Stokes Valley and the Hutt met and talked about the needs of Stokes Valley and how they could work together to meet those needs.

There were six main areas of need.

* Children/Youth: Free after school activities and free holiday programmes

* Environment

* Safety

* Communication

* Fun and events

* Community
