It is with sadness to let you know that Poppy Watts died on Monday 2 November 2009. Farewell Poppy. (A video of Poppy will be uploaded onto the site asap…come back soon).
The unveiling of an historic plaque in the presence of Poppy Watts was held on Saturday 26 September 2009. A crowd of approximately 30 people attended with Mayor David Ogden opening the small ceremony. Mayor Ogden thanked Poppy for all that she has given to the community with her knowledge, kindness and generosity. He also acknowledged the project team who spent some months preparing the plaque with its rich history, including Council staff, Gwen MacDonald, Leigh Sutton, Angus Finlayson and Harvey Watts (son of Poppy Watts). Three generations of Stokes Valleyites were also present from one of the founding members of Stokes Valley, the Thomson’s (now McCarrolls), with Peter McCarroll presenting Poppy with flowers and thanks on behalf of the Stokes Valley Community House. Poppy spoke and thanked the people who turned up on a wintery day. She recalled fond memories growing up on Speldhurst.
The Stokes Valley community is richer for its founding forefathers and their contributions which has given us many wonderful assets including Speldhurst Park and the Stokes Valley Community House.
Thank you Poppy Watts and family for your kindness, generosity and community spirit.
